Most nurses claim they are happy that the decided to become nurses, however, it seems a great deal of them would not do it again, if given the opportunity to do it over.
Medscape Medical News surveyed over 100,000 nurses as a way to research nursing job satisfaction. This was done for its Nurse Career Satisfaction Report 2016. While 95% of the nurses were definitely happy they became nurses, only 73% said they’d do it again.
According to the survey, the following options were given as alternative preferred careers:
“Go to medical school,” “Go to dental school,” “Start my own business.”
“Go to dental school,” “Start my own business.”
“Start my own business.”
Men nurses were the most unsatisfied according to the survey. 27% said they would not do it again. Paperwork and health documentation seem to be the driving factor for displeasure in the field.
It should also be noted, many nurses are forced to take flu vaccines. And many do fight it. One would have to think this creates a rather hostile work environment. Nurses also spend less time with patients as the healthcare system has become more and more, a pharmaceutical sales position that attempts to avoid liability in patients. Nurses used to have much greater roles in our medical world. The survey indicates that changes do need to be made.
