A University of Illinois student has been diagnosed with the rare, but serious, meningitis bacterial infection. The bacterial version tends to be stronger and more concerning than the viral version. Most people are naturally immune to meningitis, there is no word on whether or not this freshman student had received a meningitis vaccine recently.
In an interview with Illinois students via illinoishomepage.com, it seemed that many students had received the vaccine.
Michael Chen is up-to-date on his vaccinations.
“Every shot I’ve been told to get, I get. Whenever someone says there are free shots, I take them, because who doesn’t love free shots, right? There’s even a song about it.”
Shots guarding against meningitis are vital.
“I got my shot, I take precautions, but at the same time, you can’t stop anyone else from getting infected by it.”
The University is reaching out to all students who may have been in contact with the infected student. Mental confusion, rashes and fevers are all symptoms of Meningitis.
