Protests Erupt After Nurse Fired For Refusing Flu Shot

Protesters took the streets following a Missouri hospital’s firing of a nurse who refused to accept a flu shot. Large demonstrations took place outside of Mercy Hospital South in St. Louis on Tuesday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Organizer Nelia Aubuchon claims the nurse, who remains anonymous, has been allowed to bypass flu shots in years past. However, Mercy Hospital’s acquisition of the hospital now means a much more strict policy. Flu shot exemptions are now reduced to only medical or religious reasons. However, Aubuchon says the nurse did submit a religious exemption and the hospital declined to accept it.

“That’s the problem here, they declined the religious exemption,” Aubuchon said to the Dispatch.

The hospital will only confirm that 170 of its 44,000 staff members applied for exemptions.
