Illinois School Keeps Unvaccinated Home

A Champaign, Illinois school, Unit 4 (Kenwood elementary), is claiming that they are winning the vaccine battle. However, it seems many parents remain hold outs on getting vaccines for their kids. The school is crediting their increase in vaccine numbers on “advertising,” but it seems the likely culprit is that parents eventually have to either choose a daycare or homeschooling situation, or get the vaccines so that their kids can attend school.

Some Unit 4 students are still being kept home because they are missing their state required physical or state require vaccines, however, administrators say it’s much fewer than last year.

The cut off set by Unit4 was September 1. The district says the number of students not in compliance was a third fewer than last year. School nurses estimated the number of students kept home last year for not being in compliance was around 400.

“We have that earlier deadline just for that reason,” Unit 4 Assistant Superintendent Dr. JenniferIvory-Tatum said. “By the time that hard and fast state deadline comes around we want all of our kids to be compliant. So it gives us time to work with families and it gives us more time to advertise.
